DAMAGE TO WHEAT
Frost And Hail
Frost and hail recently damaged wheat crops in North Canterbury and Mid-Canter-bury—frost in the WaikariHawarden area and hail in the Dorie district.
The general manager of the Wheat Board (Mr L. C. Dunshea) said yesterday that there was a frost in the Wai-kari-Hawarden area on November 19, and five growers had notified damage. In one case four paddocks of a total area of 82 acres were involved. Mr Dunshea said that it was early yet to determine the amount of the damage, and the area affected could be wider than that reported. Farmers in this area were therefore recommended to inspect their crops. If they detected frost damage they should advise the board at P.O. Box 1483, Christchurch, and claim forms would be sent .to them.
Mr Dunshea said that hail fell in the Dorie area on December 11, and four growers on an area totalling 103 acres had notified damage. A frost also occurred in the Hawea Flat area, in the Wanaka district, on November 4. Six claims had been received, but after an inspection only two had qualified for compensation. One area of 12 acres had been a total loss.
