Changes In Studentships

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, December 19.

The Government was changing the method of paying teacher training allowances to holders of secondary teacher studentships, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) revealed today.

Under a new scheme such students, in addition to obtaining a basic training allowance, will be permitted to hold

university bursaries, bursary supplements or scholarships awarded to them before or after they have gained the studentships.

At present students with a secondary teacher studentship have to relinquish the fees and allowance bursary to which other students are entitled under the university bursary regulations. Mr Kinsella said the new arrangements would put these student teachers in a similar position to students offered bursaries for university study by other Government departments.

Students with secondary teacher studentships who

qualify for a fees and allowance bursary will also receive special supplementary allowances if they gain an A or B pass in the bursary examina-

tion that was started this year. The boarding allowance attached to a fees and allowances bursary is higher than that for a studentship. Student teachers who are entitled to boarding allowances will receive the higher boarding allowances attached to university bursaries. Secondary student teachers now taking the division U

course are paid £315 a year

during the first two years, and £440 a year in subsequent

years. The course enables them to study full-time at university. The new scheme will give such student teachers basic training allowances of £2OO, £250, £3OO, £350 in the first four years and afterwards £350. In addition they will receive the university bursary allowance. From 1968 all students starting a university course on a studentship will receive allowances under the new scheme. It is optional to students starting next year. All Division U students who have already begun a university course will continue with the existing scheme.
