Vegetable And Fruit Prices
There was a brisk start to Christmas week at Christchurch produce markets yesterday with fruit and vegetables in good supply. A good variety was offered. Tomatoes rose by 4d to 6d a pound on prices paid at the end of last week, selling up to 3s a pound compared to 2s 3d a pound last week. Strawberries were plentiful selling from Is 6d to 2s a punnet. New season's pumpkins sold up to 20s a case. Other prices supplied by the Christchurch Fruit and Vegetable Wholesalers* Association were:— Marrows.—Up to 20s a case. Silver Beet.—Up to 5s a case. Beetroot.—Up to 9s a dozen. Cabbages.—Up to 6s a case. Carrots.—Up to Ils a dozen bunches. Cauliflowers.—Up to 17s a case. Onions.—Up to 20s a bag. White Turnips.—Up to 8s a dozen bunches. Potatoes.—From 12s to 15s a case. Spring Onions.—From 6s to 9s a dozen bunches. Parsley.—Up to Is 3d a bunch. Radishes.—3s to 6s a dozen bunches. Lettuces.—7s 6d to 12s a dozen. Celery.—Up to 41s a dozen bunches.
Stringless Beans.—Up to 5s a pound (glasshouse). Spinach.—6s to 12s 6d a case. Cucumbers.—Nelson, up to 15s a case; North Island, up to 36s a large carton; local, up to 8s 6d a case. Rhubarb.—los to 15s a case. Tomatoes.—ls to 3s a pound. Peaches.—2os to 30s a case; 10s to 15s a tray. Plums.—Cooking: Is a pound; dessert: Is 6d to 2s 3d a pound. Cherries.—3os to 50s a case. Grapefruit.—4os to 46s a case. Chinese Gooseberries. —12s to 18s a case; 16s to 18s a tray.
