PASSPORT ISSUE

The Department of Internal Affairs in Christchurch, has had a record number of applications for passports during the last six weeks. Since the beginning of last month, 590 passports have been issued at the Christchurch office, which handles all applications for the South Island except Nelson. The majority of those going abroad, are heading for the United Kingdom and Europe. The officer in charge of the department’s Christchurch office (Mr C. J. Kite), said yesterday, that the number of passports issued so far this year had been 10 per cent more than last year. Most of the people going overseas are under 25 years. The next largest group are people over 55. Mr Kite said the number of girls travelling overseas beyond Australia was greater than the number of boys. Figures for traffic between New Zealand and Australia are not known, as passports are not required between the two countries.
