M. Napier May Withdraw

The Canterbury men’s softball representative, M. R. Napier, may have to withdraw from the Richmond team to take part in the New Zealand inter-club tournament for the John Lennon Trophy.

Napier, an outfielder, will begin a three-month term of army training on January 4, the day after the Beatty Cup inter-provincial tournament finishes at Christchurch.

He will apply for a dispensation to play in the interclub tournament. The John Lennon zone matches will be at Blenheim on January 21, the inter-zone series at Christchurch on February 11 and the finals at Auckland on March 3.

Also a promising Rugby League wing, Napier will be available for Papanui at the beginning of the season.

Mass Rescues.—A huge team of lifesavers at the popular Sydney suburban beach of Maroubra on Sunday afternoon saved 68 people in nine mass rescues as boisterous surf swept in. Earlier in the day another 25 people were saved at the beach and at South Maroubra nearby. The 93 rescued was the greatest number taken from surf at the beaches since Boxing Day. 1964
