Nearly Record For Tasman Passage

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Veteran yachtsmen took a good look on Sunday as the New Zealand yacht Fidelis sped into Sydney Harbour after an eight-day passage from

Auckland. What they saw confirmed the 61ft sloop as one of the favourites to win line honours

in this year’s Sydney to Hobart race.

“Fidelis had a Genoa and a main flying and she came through the heads at an amazinz speed,” said one Cruising Yacht Club member. “1 was out watching her in a runabout and I’d estimate she was doing a good 10 knots.”

It was a flying finish to one of the fastest passages across the 1300-mile stretch of ocean. The skipper, J. Darven (Auckland) had wanted to beat the record for the crossing—seven days and 19 hours —set by Solo in 1961. But Fidelis did it in just under eight days—only a few hours off the mark.

Her fastest leg was 241 miles in one day.
