Test Incentive Offered To South Africans

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

PRETORIA.

South Africa’s cricketers have been given an incentive to beat the Australians in the test rubber that starts at the Wanderers’ Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday.

A South African brewery concern has announced a talent money scheme to boost performances against the Australians. It has offered a total of 5625 Australian dollars (5N.Z.2250) as an incentive for the South African cricketers. The home side will split up 1875 dollars if it wins the series.

South Africa’s highest scoring batsman and most success-

ful bowler in an innings of the series will receive 625 dollars each. The breweries have offered an additional 2500 dollars if two world records are broken. Any South African batsman who breaks G. Sobers’s world record score of 365 not out in tests will collect 120 dollars, and another 1250 dollars will be collected by any South African bowler to eclipse J.

Laker’s record 19-wicket haul in a test.

The sponsors’ spokesman said: “nothing is impossible in cricket, not even new batting and bowling records at test level.

“We would be only too happy to pay out the whole 5625 dollars talent money. It would mean the South Africans were the world cricket champions.”

Freestyle Record.—K. Wainwright cut 25.25ec off her own Australian 1500 metres freestyle record at the New South Wales swimming trials on Sunday night but failed in an attempt on the world record. She recorded 18min 31.5 sec, well away from the world record of 18min 12sec held by Patti Caretto (United States).
