University Tested In Water Polo Match

In the first match of the second round of the senior water polo competition, University held off several determined blds by the lowly Spreydon side to win

Although University had the most possession, it was unable to capitalise on mistakes in front of the Spreydon goalmouth.

Good play by the Spreydon goal-keeper, J. Monk, contributed to the closeness of the score.

I. Gunthorp opened the scoring for University when his team was one man short. At half-time the score was still 1-0. In the second half W. Williamson netted a perfect lobshot and I. MacDonald scored from the four-yard mark. For Spreydon N. Roake scored after a fast break up the pool.

■van Match Wharenul avenged its defeat last week at the hands of Elmwood, to win 4-3 against the same Elmwood side.

A. Kindred. I. Simson and L. Wilson scored in the first quarter to give Wharenul an early lead, but P. Ross and C. Gurr (Elmwood) headed several attacks. Gurr scored a good goal. B. Henderson, the Elmwood

goal-keeper, gave a typically safe display and often began attacking moves from the back of the pool. N. Chamberlain (Elmwood) brought the acorea closer with a goal from well out, but P MacFarlane scored for Wharenui to make the score at the end of the third quarter 4-2. The Elmwood forwards launched attack after attack, but the only goal scored was by J. Hay after a good pass from Gurr.

Rasy Win Although K. Lanyon and P Hatchwefl won the swim-ups for Christchurch, the competition leader, Beckenham, had an easy 11-0 win. The former Canterbury rep resentatlve, L. Scott, showed glimpses of his past Interprovincial play with fast breaks and accurate shooting. He scored four good goals for Beckenham.

Other scorers were L. McIntosh (2). F. McKenzie, R Henry, G. McKenzie, G. Knight and G. Williamson. Other results were: Senior B.—Beckenham 9. University 0: Sockburn Park 8. JelHe Park 4.

Junior.—Spreydon 3. Becken ham 2; Jetlie Park 2, Christ church 0: Wharenul beat Elm *ood by default.
