Council Fears Loss Of Department

If the Electricity Distribution Commission Bill was to become law, the Lyttelton Borough Council would eventually lose its Electricity Department, said the report of the electricity committee of the council, received at a meeting last evening.

The committee said that it reported the bringing of the power supply under the jurisdiction of the Local Government Commission and recommended that representations be made to the Minister of Electricity and the member of Parliament for the district to have the bill deferred. The council held action on the report until its next meeting.

Smoke Inspector.—The Lyttelton borough health inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan) has been appointed a smoke inspector. The Director-Gen-eral of Health (Dr. G. O. L. Dempster) said in a letter that Mr O’Callaghan had successfully completed a course in November. Diamond Harbour Sewers. —Work on the Diamond Harbour sewer scheme was expected to be completed by January 31, 1967, the works overseeer (Mr F. Davidson) said in his monthly report. Considering the problems and difficulties encountered, the progress had been spectacular, he said. Electrical Work.—A temporary electricity service had

been erected for the building of the Cressy terrace reservoir, the Electrical Overseer (Mr R. P. Miller) said in his November report. All crossarms and overhead lines had been renewed in the reclamation area from the sub-slation to Sinclair Melbourne’s slipway, and overhead lines in Seymour quay were also replaced.

Drainage Permits. Five permits for plumbing and drainage work, of a total value of £lOO9. were Issued in the borough in November.

Building Permits.—Thirtyeight building permits were approved by the council in the six weeks to December 16. Permits ranging in value from £4500 to £lO were issued.

Fire Fund.—A fund has I been opened by the council to assist the family of Mr G. Smith, a retired taxi-driver, whose home at 49 Hawkhurst road, Lyttelton, was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning. The Mayor, Mr J. B. Collett, I said that gifts to the fund could be made in the council’s offices.
