Tonga’s Decimal Change In April

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) NUKUALOFA, December 19. The Tongan Government announced today that the change to decimal currency would take place on April 3 next year.

The currency will be named “paanga” and “seniti,” but will be on a par with the Australian dollar and cent. Notes will be in denominations of a half, one, two, five and 10 paanga, and although named paanga will also show the dollar sign, prefixed with the letter “T”. Coinage will have denominations of one paanga and 50, 20, 10, five, two and one seniti or cents.

This will be the first, time Tonga has had its own coinage, as in the past it has used Australian coins, with Tongan paper money only. The present currency is to be withdrawn as soon as possible after April 3, but will remain legal tender for some time to cover the change. All notes will carry a photo-

gravure of the late Queen Salote, and various typical Tongan scenes.
