One-Man Show

Joycelyn Mclntyre’s paintings and drawings are now exhibited at the Little Woodware shop and Gallery. Lively, gaudy, extremely loose paintings are so different from the hard, precise, inflexible drawings they might have come from another hand! Continuous line, reminiscent of one-line drawings in pre-war Punch, gives great clarity, but unless backed by the discipline and struggle of long study, cannot reflect subtlety and refinement. Instead it tends toward visual cliches and

stylistic abreviations, and this is what has happened in Miss Mclntyre’s life drawings, where all eyes and hands and nose are monotonously alike. Would that some of the tightness in the drawing find its way into the painting, which while it has a certain verve, leaves so many problems unsolved, as to be tantalising and frustrating. But this is only one man’s opinion and the reader had best see for himself before the exhibition closes at the end of this week. —H.J.S.
