Deaconess Ordained

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, December 9. One of the Church of England’s most unusual ceremonies was held yesterday when Mrs S. Koreneff was ordained deaconess by the Bishop of Wellington (the Rt Rev. H. W. Baines) in the Church of All Saints. She is the first deaconess to be ordained in the Diocese of Wellington. There have been several deaconesses in the Diocese of Christchurch since the 19305.

In her new capacity, Deaconess Koreneff will have many duties. They include visiting, instruction and the taking of matins and evensong. She also has a licence to preach and another to administer the chalice, although she cannot consecrate, for this is a priestly function. The only sacrement she will be allowed to administer will be that of Baptism. Deaconess Koreneff was formerly managing director of the “Wanganui Herald.”
