Another Record For Miss Shipston
The string of recordbreaking swims by Miss Tui Shipston was continued last evening.
In the 440 yd freestyle, Miss Shipston eclipsed several marks, foremost among them being the New Zealand junior record. She also broke the Canterbury senior record, the Australian junior and senior qualifying times and the New Zealand qualifying time. Miss Shipston’s time was smin s.7sec, which was .ssec better than the national junior mark held by Miss Susanne Woonton of Auckland. The other marks broken (with former holders in brackets) were: Canterbury junior smin 17sec (Miss J. Reid); Canterbury senior
smin 6.lsec (Miss S. Nicholson); Australian qualifying times: smin lOsec (senior) and smin 20sec (junior); New Zealand qualifying time: smin 40sec. Another Canterbury record was broken by Miss Catherine Whiting in the under-13 220 yd backstroke. Her time of 2min 56.65ec bettered the 3min 11.5 sec set by Miss Wendy Dale about seven years ago. Australian qualifying times were also broken three times. In the junior boys’ 220 yd breaststroke, R. Wilson (3min Usee) and P. Hay (3min 2.Bsec) bettered the qualifying time of 3min 3sec. Miss Jill Neilson, for the second time in recent weeks, broke the qualifying time of 2min 38sec in the 220 yd junior girls* freestyle. Her time was 2min 37.8 sec.
