SEARCH FOR WATER.—Primitive, laborious methods of shifting earth are used by the villagers of Vaini, in the Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, India, in building a mile-long embankment to catch waters of the Gaharwarkhand hill stream for irrigation. Payment for the work is helping to relieve the poverty of the villagers, who live in a drought-stricken area.
