AROUND HIE GREENS

The success of the Canterbury teams against Otago for the Redpath Shield was an encouraging start for the representative season. Although the aggregate points were the vital part of the encounter, the performance of several of the centre’s stronger fours also created considerable interest. H. Deavoll, of Sydenham, is a happy soul and his cheerfulness seems to get the best from the other members of his four. Their performance in decisively beating the strong Dunedin team skipped by W. Mundy was a notable one. Deavoll obviously has recaptured the form that deserted him last season. K. G. Murray is perhaps better known as a singles player, but his Opawa four played well. They were well down at one stage, but a five and four on the last two ends gave them a fully merited victory. Murray’s four of J. Bigg, W. Cresswell and L. Derbidge has entered for the Dominion tournament; and, although not a team that will carry with it a great reputation, still could well match some of the better known teams. LEADING TEAMS The strong Burwood and Christchurch teams are leading in the Three Fours Championship of the Christchurch Bowling centre after the first three rounds. Points for the leading teams are:—Burwood and Christchurch 17, Papanui 16i, Fendalton 16, Dallington 15, R.S.A. 15, Riccarton Racecourse 14, Spreydon 14. In the Manning Cup competition, Beckenham, Hornby and Riccarton Racecourse are separated by only one point. The points for the leading teams are.—Beckenham 59.5, Hornby and Riccarton Racecourse 58.5, St. Albans 56, Sydenham 54.922, Christchurch W.M.C., Christchurch and Elmwood 52, Rangiora 51.064.

Leading teams after the first two rounds of the Robinson Shield are.—Belfast, Christchurch, New Brighton, Opawa, R.S.A., Riccarton Racecourse and United all 24 points. Riccarton W.M.C. 20. BARNETT TIKI

Austin (Ashburton). DEPTH The Riccarton Racecourse club is having a very successful season and with Christchurch is the only club to have its teams placed in the leaders in the Three Fours, Manning Cup and Robinson Shield. LINDLEY-NEILL CUP The following players have been selected to represent the Christchurch Bowling Centre in the annual representative fixture against the West Coast Centre to be played at Greymouth on Saturday:—F. 8001, H. EDGEWARE Last season’s champion pair, J. A. Hayward and A. J. G. Johnstone, lost their second life to G. R. Black and K. N.' Glover in a very close match in the club’s championships. Johnstone took a nine point lead in the early stages of the match but good drawing by Glover reduced the deficit and on the twenty-first end the teams were all square. On the extra end Johnstone held one shot but, with his last bowl, Glover trailed the kitty with a perfect shot to go three shots up. CHALLENGE SHIELD South Brighton took a good lead in its matches with Dallington for the Challenge Shield when it won by 195 points to 138 last Saturday. Results (South Brighton names first) were:—Muir 30, Hughes 13: Hamilton 19, Adamson 19; Stubley 21, Wright 11; Burgess 22, Rowland 24; Appleton 19, McKendry 22; English 33, Greenwood 17; Anticich 27, Garven 15; McDonald 24, Barret 17. CASHMERE Two new members of the club, R. Madsen and R. Speer, have made an impression at their new club. Madsen is well known in Christchurch bowling circles. He played for the Opawa Club for many years and served a term as president. Speer is from the Mount Albert Club. Auckland, where he established a fine playing record. A. Roberts, one of the club’s most experienced players, was surprisingly beaten by a second year player, B. Marriott, in the club’s single championship. The club’s open singles champion, E. Taylor, has begun the season in fine style. In the first two rounds he beat G. Crossen and N. V. Burt and now looks to be one of the favourites for the title.
