Painful Journey Home

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. .7. A young' Englishman who contracted a serious kidney disease while working on a farm in Southland set off on the further leg of his painful journey home tonight. Twenty-three-year-old Mr C. P. Byass, of Driffield, East Yorkshire, left Auckland Hospital where he had been dangerously ill to board a jet for Los Angeles. There he will spent a few days in hospital to gather strength for the journey to London. Travelling with him are his parents, Mr and Mrs F. F. Byass, who flew to New Zealand as soon as they learned his condition was serious, and Dr. B. Leeming, an English doctor going home on leave from Auckland Hospital. Mr Byass was transferred to Auckland Hospital from Dunedin on Sunday after a plane trip from Christchurch. He is constantly in need of sedatives and needs a blood change every 26 hours. He has been in New Zealand just over 12 months and was employed at a farm near Otautau when he became ill two months ago. Much of the organisation for Mr Byass’s trip home has been arranged by a world link of Lions International Clubs. Arrangements in New Zealand were carried out by the Invercargill, Dunedin and

Auckland dubs, and in the United States he will be met by members of the Los Angeles Club. Plans are in hand for English clubs to speed him to

Leeds Infirmary, Yorkshire, on his arrival in London. Before the family boarded the plane tonight the young man's father said: “We, just want to get him home.’
