Chief Rainbow Sires Winners

Progeny of the imported stallion, Chief Rainbow, won two of the three heats of the parade for two-year-olds run over 10 furlongs at the Addington trials yesterday. Times were fairly slow because of a strong, blustery east wind.

Johnny Special and Khandallah were New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes candidates to take part in the heats, but they failed to distinguish themselves. Rain Chief (Chief RainbowReality), trained by R. L. Tatterson, overcame a very slow start to win the first heat in 2min 54 2-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 7 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 34 l-ssec. Saladin (Sally Boy-Gay Edith) went a useful race for second, ahead of Special Form (Garrison Hanover-Bonny Doone) and a youngster by Garrison Hanover from Regal Duchess. Johnny Special, after being one of the leaders to the straight, stopped and finished sixth.

Shepherd's Delight (Chief Rainbow—Riviera) was quickly in front in the second heat and she was untroubled to win by a length from Keep Smiling (Robert Dillon—Modern Smile) in 2min 52 2-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin ssec, and the final quarter in 32 2-ssec.

Leading Light (Local Light— Rose Tattoo) was a fair third, ahead of Waratah (Johnny Globe—Queen Ngaio). Good Chase (Light Brigade— Torlese) finished much too strongly for the others in the third heat, recording 2min 53sec the last half-mile in Imin ssec, and the final quarter in 33 4-ssec. He won by three lengths from Johnny Dhu (Johnny Globe Chappelet), with two lengths to the pacemaker, Francis John (Mecca Chief—Light Variety), and a gap to Fratello (Forward— Wee Doll). Khandallah headed the others, but he was beaten off. AT WAIMATE Coronet Peak and Bonny Strathair finished first and second respectively in the first heat of the 2min 20sec class trot. Coronet Peak led over the last half-mile and won easily by about half a length from her stablemate. Bonny Strathair. The pair will probably form the favourite bracket for the first leg of the on-course double, the Publicans' Handicap, at Waimate tomorrow. The winner trotted the 13 furlongs in 3min 52sec, the last halfmile in Imin 56 4-ssec. Doctor Scott and Martin Brigade were next. Highland Fortress made most pace and won the second heat in 3min 45 l-ssec, the last half-

mile in Imin 6 l-ssec. Worth Seein’ finished second, just ahead of Borderman, with a gap to Castleton’s Queen. Gay Light, Pacing Simba and Smokey Gamble won the heats of the ChristchuYch Trotting Club Handicap, each horse receiving £35. The runners-up received £lO and the third horses £5. Gay Light won the first heat in 3min 42 3-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 4 3-ssec. She is in the Rot I’Or Stakes tomorrow. She beat Early Frost and Battle Star, two other candidates for Waimate. Tyrone and Authentic which lost ground early, finished behind Pacing Simba in 3min 37sec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 l-ssec. Pacing Simba has great speed, but is not reliable at the start. Smokey Gamble overcame a slow start to win the third heat by a head from a likely improver in Seafield Countess, with Los Altos a good third, ahead of Cape Win. The winner recorded 3min 43sec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 3-ssec. Fifty-six horses contested seven heats of a qualifying trial, only seven proving capable of pacing 12 furlongs in the gusty conditions in 3min 23sec or better. Those to qualify were Ambler, Sleeman. Vip, Willowbrae, Don Carlos, Limbala, and Gladfield, the last four gaining their tickets in the final heat. Willowbrae won this in 3min 21 2-ssec, the fastest time of the day.
