BABY DIES

Car Turns Over A baby suffered fatal injuries when the ear his mother was driving skidded in loose gravel and overturned on the Main South road, about four miles south of Dunsandel, yesterday morning. He was Brian Richard Satterthwaite, aged 11 months, son of Mr I. B. Satterthwaite and Mrs Elizabeth Satterthwaite, of 21 Wairarapa terrace, Fendalton. Mrs Satterthwaite was driving south about 11 a.m. Her attention was distracted by the baby, who was in a car seat strapped to the front seat. The car skidded in loose shingle on the correct side of the road, went across the road, rolled over, went through a low gorse hedge and came to rest upside down in a paddock. A passing motorist got Mrs Satterthwaite and the baby from the car, and took them to the Christchurch Hospital. The baby died at 12.15 p.m. Mrs Satterthwaite suffered abrasions, bruises and severe shock.

The police ask anyone who saw the accident or who attended to the injured to get in touch with the motor accident inquiry branch at the Central Police Station.
