Stole Money For Betting

(N.Z. Press Association/ WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. An employee of the Public Service Investment Society said in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today that he stole £455 from the society “solely for gambling at the races.” Warren Desmond George Hook, aged 25, married, pleaded guilty to stealing the money between June and October this year. Mr R. D. Jamieson, S.M., remanded Hook for a week for sentence. Detective Senior-Sergeant R. N. Macdonald said Hook,

who had been a servant of the society for five years, was assistant cashier on Government pay-days. As customers nude their investments, Hook would endorse their passbooks, pocket the money and deposit slips. Ten days later, in the dataprocessing department, he would take from the deposit system, deposit slips for the same amount he had taken earlier.

He also repossessed a customer's car, sold it for £250 and took the money. Between June and October, he stole not less than £455 from the society and deposited £lOO in various accounts. On November 25 he voluntarily admitted the thefts to the secretary and was dismissed. Of the total stolen, £355 had not been recovered.
