SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Present Type Preferred (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 8. The New Zealand secondary school was geared to suit national conditions and should not be adapted to an American or English pattern, said the principal of Onehunga High School, Mr C. J. McCarthy, at the prize-giving ceremony tonight. “We hear talk of the establishment of junior high schools and senior high schools on the American pattern,” he said. “One reason being given for this is that qualified teachers can be concentrated in the senior schools and the junior ones can be staffed with unqualified ones. “This would be a disastrous move. We do not want the American system, which is geared to satisfy Americans. “We have our own individual system developed over the years to satisfy the needs of New Zealanders.”
