“High Costs Preventing Long Way-port Stops”

Some people did not realise the very high daily costs of large liners, and that stops at way-ports could be extended for more than 12 to 24 hours only by increasing passenger fares at least £5 to £7 for each 24 hours the total voyage was extended, said the manager of Chandris Lines (N.Z.), Ltd., (Mr P. N. Holloway). Mr Holloway was commenting on a letter to “The Press” from a correspondent, Mr A. Thacker, who said that ships on regular runs or cruises throughout the world had increased their speed, and some ships spent little or no time in the advertised ports of call.

A reply was given in November to this letter by Sir Peter Phipps, a director of Chandris Lines. (N.Z.), Ltd. Mr Holloway, in addition to the reply given by Sir Peter Phipps, said that Chandris

Lines, like all other shipping companies endeavoured to give the maximum stop-over in way-ports in proportion to the cost factor of ship’s operation.

"The times in port given by Mr Thacker are substantially correct, but on this particular voyag! passengers had a full day in Suva, and from Saturday afternoon to early Sunday morning in Balboa (the early evening and night in Balboa is far more interesting than the daytime). Cristobal, which Mr Thacker says was an advertised port of call, is not usually a stop-over if a stop has already been made at Balboa.

“At Miami the ship was at Port Everglades from 12.30 one day until midday the following day, that is, 24 hours. A 24-hour stop-over at such a port is as much or more than usually provided by any service,” Mr Holloway said.
