Students’ Mental Health

Sir,—Relevant or not, the massacre by the deranged Texas student was cited by another correspondent. I resent the despicable insinuations of “A. B. Cedarian,” who, if he Is really concerned about mental health, should reveal himself publicly or challenge me privately.'Psychology is at

least striving to become a science; it is medical psychiatry which is stagnant—disconnected pools in the morass of psychoanalytic hogwash. A medical student wishing to become a specialist in mental disorders can obtain his M. 8., Ch.B. (and few, even if psychotic, ever fail), and then spend another eight years becoming a competent psychologist, or he can straightaway call himself a psychiatrist and hang out his shingle accordingly, Before he burbles further about what might happen, “A. B. Cedarian” should find out what is really going on here and now in the field of student counselling. Professor Ironside has frankly revealed some of it.—Yours, etc. VARIAN J. WILSON. December 8, 1966.

Mr C. I. Blincoe, of Wellington, has been appointed assistant-secretary to the Agri, cultural Production Council. The secretariat is now Messrs R. C. Stuart (executive director), B. Ivory (secretary), and Blincoe.
