Golden Vanity A Fit Newcomer At Omoto
Golden Vanity will be a fit newcomer from Riccarton to race against the open sprinters on the second day of the Grey* mouth Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow.
Mr F. J. Donnelly’s Summertime mare showed sharp speed over five furlongs on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. With G. W. Mein up she dashed over the final three furlongs in 36 3-ssec, and completed her task attractively. A north-westerly made for fast times in short sprints on the plough and the trial grass, but Golden Vanity’s trial showed she had freshened well since her only start at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Next week she will switch to a middle distance at the Horarata meeting. She will be ridden there by the successful Wingatui apprentice, P. J. Silver. STRONG RUN General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) recorded 39 4-ssec for the final three furlongs in beating Early Dawn (D. N. Hadfield) by half a length and Sabell (P. Williams) by nearly four lengths from the seven furlongs. General Gilbert, which usually develops good form about this time of the year, ran the seven furlongs in 1.30 l-ssec. Later, his stablemates Coseta (E. G. Low) and Hamadan (Kerkvliet) sprinted seven furlongs in 1.30 2-ssec, the last three in 39. Millie Small started with
them, but was eased in the final furlong. Tsunamai (G. W. Mein) and Brown Brocade (D. N. Hadfield), partners in a good gallop on Tuesday, had more speed in reserve yesterday while running seven furlongs in 1.33, the last three in 37. Town Talk (N. Cowles) drew out close to the post to lead Coral Prince (D. Tucker) by a length and a half after running seven furlongs in 1.32 4-ssec, the final three in 39 2-ssec.
Faraday (C. T. Wilson) followed in 1.35 2-ssec, the last three taking 40 3-ssec. Standout (A. J. Stokes) cleared out from Hushaway (B. Collins) in the final furlong of seven furlongs and finished a good gallop in 1.31 l-ssec, the final three in 37. Shipmates (Stokes) sprinted half a mile with his usual dash in 49 l-ssec. Court (B. Collins) followed in 52 2-ssec, and Pango (D. J. Thistoll) in 52 l-ssec. Pharasal (Stokes), a consistent performer for the Tomkinson stable at the New Zealand Cup meeting, ran three furlongs in 37 4-5. FAST FINISH Winscombe (P. Williams), one of few tried on the trial grass, ran a mile in 1.46 3-5, and quickened with the wind
to help him to record 50 for the last half. Kalimera (B. Edens) was going well with a half length lead over Danny Kaye (R. Moir) finishing half a mile in 48 2-ssec. They should do well in their holiday racing from G. S. Barr’s stable.
Talic, which has been treated for a blood disorder since he last raced, raised hopes for improved form soon when he easily won a five-fur-long sprint from the starting gate on the outside of the course proper. Talic was in front soon after the start and widened his lead to three lengths over Expel near the end. Command Performance was third, a position he had held throughout the running. Tumble and Water Deer, both members of R. Preece’s team were the first two home, in close order, in the other barrier trial. They were followed in by Talic’s stablemate, White Rajah. Tumble is to start his holiday racing at the Dunedin Cup meeting, and may be taken to the Southland New Year meeting with Roman General, Expel and other members of the Preece team. The Southland Guineas would be on Roman General’s programme if the team is taken to Invercargill.
