TOBACCO HIT

Sandstorm Damage (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON. December 1. A sandstorm whipped by ! winds of more than 40 miles! an hour blasted tobacco fields in the Marahau area of Motu-. eka last night, leaving damaged and ruined plants. Young plants suffered from a; similar storm on Tuesday' and had little time to recover, when gale force winds; whistled along the Marahau! valley during the night. One farmer. Mr D. G. Bloomfield, said a block of. about an acre and a half was! blasted out at his lOt-acrel farm. The damage was severe 1 and replanting would be necessary in some areas.

He said that he finished planting about three weeks ago and would now have to put in a further 7000-8000 plants It was hard to tell the full extent of damage at this stage but plants were " just ‘•knocked out.” he said. Many plants in beds would be too big and it would be necessary to scout around for more.
