BITTEN BACK
(N.Z. P. A.-Reut cr— Copyrigh t > LONDON. The top Welsh Rugby club, Neath, has cancelled all this season’s fixtures with its rival club, Newbridge, after an alleged biting incident. After the two teams met at Neath on November 15, the Newbridge winger, L. Hewer, claimed he had been bitten by an opposing player. Neath, unbeaten this season, is currently leading in the unofficial Welsh Rugby championship, closely followed by Newbridge. A statement by the Neath club secretary, Mr A. Griffiths, released yesterday, says:
“In view of the manner in which the case of the Newbridge player was introduced and the consequent wide publicity given to an allegation which was not previously brought to our notice, we consider that it will be in the best interests of Newbridge and Neath if they do not meet again this season.”
Neath had previously refuted the allegation and said that medical opinion was available to rebut the claim that the marks on Hewer's body were caused by biting. A return match was to have been played at Newbridge on February 4.
