Assault In Ship

A 4dyear-old greaser, Hugh Paden, from the Port Adelaide, was fined £l5 on a charge of assaulting the ship’s chief steward, Herbert Frederick Plummer, aboard the ship on Wednesday afternoon, when he appeared before Captain C. C. Gass and Mr R. H. Duff, J.P.’s, in the Magistrate's Court at Lyttelton yesterday.

The accused, who pleaded not guilty, said that the chief steward had made disparaging remarks about his character, according to an informant he had met ashore. He returned aboard demanding an apology before the master of the vessel, but later became angry and assaulted the chief steward.
