RADIO HAURAKI HEARD CLEARLY

Radio Hauraki was heard clearly in Christchurch last evening. The radio station began its first test transmission on its full strength of 2000 watts.

A number of residents in Christchurch heard the test transmission and a listener at Lincoln heard the message. The standard message seemed to be, “Testing on 1480 kilocycles. Radio Hauraki, the home of the young New Zealanders. Please write to us. . . .”

References to the “good ship Tiri” were also heard.

All the music heard was popular and no advertising wag heard during the test message.

Other messages heard included: “This is Radio Hauraki, top of the dial, Yah; Remember to keep a watch at the top end of the dial; That’s the type of music, you are

going to hear" and “There is a new sound in town.” Radio Hauraki has a “sizeable and substantially overdue” telephone bill, the company’s managing-director, Mr D. J. Gapes, said this afternoon, the Press Association reported. “But the Post Office is being very good about it,” he said.

A part of the account had been paid and the Post Office had accepted in good faith that it would be paid as soon as possible. He said Radio Hauraki had been “flat broke” for several months. It had received credit from many businesses it had dealt with in its venture to get a network on the air.
