Good Fields For Methven Golf

A host of leading men and women players will take part in the Me th ven Golf Club’s Agfa - Gevaert 100 tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament is part of the Methven floral festival activities and all proceeds from the event, which is sponsored by Agfa-Gevaert (N.Z.) Ltd, will be donated by the club to the festival funds for

the benefit of local amenities. Fully representative fields will compete in the men’s senior and junior grades and the women’s silver and bronze divisions.

Heading the men’s section are the runners-up at the last two New Zealand amateur finals, R. K. Atkinson and E. H. M. Richards, both of Russley. The leading qualifier in this year’s amateur championship, J. R. Broadhurst (Russley) is another entry and the experienced T. M. Stout (Russley) will be making his first tour-

nament appearance since transferring to Christchurch from Fiji. Freyberg Rose Bowl representatives taking pdrt will be A. C. Browne and T. E. Phahlert (Ashburton) and I. S. Beswarick (Timaru). Other prominent entries from the Mid-South Canterbury area include W. Stark (Ashburton) and R. S. Wakefield (Timaru), while North Canterbury will be represented by J. E. and T. Monk, from Kaiapoi.

The women's field is also a notable one. Miss S. Grigg, the New Zealand representa-

live, and Miss C. Sullivan, who achieved considerable success at the recent national women’s championships, are the most prominent figures. They will be challenged by Miss B. Stafford, Miss S. Thompson, Miss B. Langley, Mrs C. Davison, Miss M. McKay and Miss B. Taylor. The Methven course has an inviting lay-out set against a splendid scenic background. The course is in immaculate order and the ball will be running freely, but accuracy and control will be at a premium. u
