RACING FAR CRY PICKED AT WOODVILLE TODAY

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

Woodville horses are sure to play a prominent part at the Woodville Jockey Club’s summer meeting which opens today. Any one of the three Bolton Handicap candidates trained on the track could contest the finish of the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

Far Cry, in outstanding shape and peak form, may be the hardest to beat in what appears a very open field.

i Far Cry is one of two can- ‘ didates trained by J. W. Harris. The other is Sherlocks, ■ which has shown steady imi provement in his latest work. The centre’s other representai tive is General Derby and a i win by him would not sur- : prise.

There are five Woodville sprinters engaged in the Oete Handicap, the second leg of the double.

Automaton may perhaps find six furlongs a little short

with speedsters like Tipperary Tom and Serena in the field, but the long straight will suit her. She should be the best light-weight in the field.

Last time out, Far Cry flashed up for second to Fremont at Levin and, had he run straight, probably would have won.

Woodville will suit Far Cry. It is a roomy track. In the straight he could prove too seasoned with his 7st 41b. Sherlocks, regarded as a sprinter, has had his work lengthened lately and it will be interesting to see how he shapes at distance racing. He looks a good type for it, rangy and fast. He is likely to run prominently. John Derry will be a hard

! horse to beat. He was a close third to Fremont and Far Cry at Levin. This time he will be considerably harder to beat, especially if the ground is good. Apa presents a problem. He is in a class above the rest of the field and two sprints at Feilding should have him ready for a mile and a quarter. Yet he is in the early stages of an Auckland Cup preparation and it is possible that his trainer might not have given him quite enough fast work to last him tomorrow.

The engagement of B. F. Andrews for Ichtar will win the big gelding a following. He has worked well during the week, especially on Monday morning. The big track will suit him as he has shown his best form on some of the larger courses. SPRINT FINISH

The sprint finish could be between Automaton and Tipperary Tom. They are in great heart and not far from peak form.

At six furlongs Tipperary Tom may beat Automaton. If he does, it will not be by much, judging by the way in which Automaton has worked lately. Tipperary Tom, which will have B. F. Andrews up, will be on trial for important Ellerslie engagements. If Andrews is impressed with the chestnut’s showing, he may elect to ride him in the Railway Handicap. Last time out, Tipperary Tom ran on well for second to Awaroa at Levin, a track which did not suit him. As he has improved since, he could be the best of the Oete Handicap prospects. Serena will have a big Woodville following on the strength of her promising effort at Feilding. She was handy throughout and second at the line behind My Call. He is not in the field this time and Serena is reported to have improved. There was some rain yesterday morning, but a high wind later in the day should have ensured good drying and a fast track.
