TUNNEL TOLLS

20 p.c. Rise Found

Increased tonnages and toll revenue for October were reported to the ChristchurchLyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday, and the chairman (Mr R. A. Witbrock) said the trend had been maintained in November.

Reviewing the figures, Mr Witbrock said they were a little down on the budget forecast for motor-cycles, but up for everything else. It was impossible to tell whether the increase was natural or a result of the lowering of toll charges. “We expected a natural increase of 10 per cent, but we are getting 20 per cent,” he said.

The budget required a toll revenue of £378 a day, the actual result was £407.

In his report for October the general manager (Mr L. H. Wilson) said the increase in vehicle toll receipts for seven months of the financial year had been £15,192, or 21.3 per cent, compared with a budgeted £6974 increase. The 42.8 per cent increase in tonnage for October was considerably higher than the budget estimate. There was a reduction of .1 per cent in goods toll receipts, but this was entirely a result of the reduction in the goods toll rate.

Total revenue had increased by £4lO.
