‘Killing Vietnamese To Contain China’

“No matter how you try to get away from it, the United States is trying to contain China by killing Vietnamese,” the Rev. O. S. Robinson, convener of the international affairs committee of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, told a Christchurch sixth-form pupils’ conference yesterday.

Although not a pacifist he thought that in the complex Vietnam situation, the United States military effort was selfdefeating. Any nation as large as China inevitably dominated her neighbours—just as the United States dominated the countries of South America. The effective way of stopping Communism was by tackling the problems of the countries of Asia and Africa, Mr Robinson said. If there were 100 instead of one New Zealand aid team in Thailand something effective might be achieved. The Western world, in which only two countries

gave more than 1 per cent of their income to aiding other countries, was not prepared to pay the price of peace. The total economic aid offered to Vietnam amounted to one week’s cost of waging the war.

Most, if not all, public transport authorities will use dollars and cents from July 10 next year, when the change to decimal currency takes place. Power supply authorities will alter their tariffs and use the new currency from April 1 next year; They will convert totals back to £ s. d. for the three months until July.
