Silver Coins Now Becoming Short
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 22. With the penny shortage temporarily solved by Australian imports, Wellington banks are now facing a shortage of silver coins.
Hoarding was given as one of the reasons for the growing shortage. But the Decimal Currency Board said today that especially large coin issues were made in 1964-65 to meet the country’s needs until the introduction of the decimal currency.
Thirty tons of Australian pennies were brought into Wellington two weeks ago to ease the penny shortage, and the National Bank today distributed its 21 tons to its city branches. The bank’s share, totalling £lOOO, was divided into £250 lots.
“But we’re still short,” said a bank official, “and silver
coins are getting short too. A lot of people have gone mad on coin collecting.”
