“Vote For Me...”

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Nov. 22. The tonnage of election propaganda was showing a marked drop this year compared with other elections, Mr M. G. Hitchings, librarian of the Hocken Library, said today.

Radio and television have made great inroads on the printed word, he said.

The Hocken Library knew this well for it had used a fair weight of paper this year in writing to every candidate and political party, both the headquarters and the electoral secretaries to

gather a complete collection of all printed electioneering material used throughout the country. At the next election, the library plans to turn its thoughts to the collecting of video and sound tapes to preserve for the future all electioneering material issued. The library has a topical display with a selection of Its wealth of electioneering pamphlets from many elections. Mr Hitchings said the format and type, names and faces had all changed, but the theme was constant—“ Vote for me and you will prosper.”
