FACTORY DUST
Investigation Urged
Because a large number of new materials was being brought into use in commercial and industrial processes, often without a basic knowledge of their composition, the safety limits and possible hazard from waste or dust should be assessed by some reponsible body to determine the control and advise users, Mr A. P. Millthorpe, the Chief City Health Inspector, reported to the City Council on Monday evening.
He had been asked for a report on responsibility for ensuring that reasonable control was given to possible hazard from dust accumulation in factories.
The Department of Labour had some limited control and responsibility, and amendment of the Factories Act was being considered to extend the powers to give better control over dust hazards. The council agreed that the Minister of Labour Mr Shand) should be asked for any proposals his department had both on dust accumulation and safety from fire and explosion tn factories generally.
