Suspicion Of Arson

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 20. Arson is thought to be responsible for a blaze which did damage estimated at £30,000 early on Saturday to a clothing retail store at Otahuhu. This was the second attempt within three weeks to damage the store by fire. New Christmas stock and uniforms for most Otahuhu, Otara and Mangere schools, were destroyed in the blaze, in Todds Clothing Ltd., Great South road. Detective B. Howard, of Otahuhu, said a cleaner working in a shop nearby saw the fire and gave the alarm. Two fire engines arrived at 3.25 a.m. by which time the fire had a good hold. The blaze had begun in a rear storeroom which was gutted, and spread through windows to the main storeroom immediately behind the store showroom.

Mr Howard said: “At present we are treating it as arson."
