N.Z. STEEL COMPLEX

Work Starts At Waikato Heads (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 18. Clearing has begun of a 20acre area in the State forest plantation at Waikato North Head where the ironsand concentration plant of New Zealand Steel, Ltd., will be sited.

The work is expected to be completed by March. The trees being felled are pine planted between 1937 and 1940.

A battery of magnetic separators and ball-mills for grinding the ironsand concentrate will occupy the main building on the site. A few hundred yards away drilling of the ironsand deposit is in progress to provide detailed information for the company’s mining plan. Corings are being sent for testing to the D.S.I.R.’s Gracefield laboratories. About 100 bore holes will be drilled to a depth of 200 feet.

Mining is expected to begin about July, 1968.
