KAIKOURA ART EXHIBITION
Nearly 100 Works On Display
The annual art exhibition sponsored by the Kaikoura Art Group attracted an entry of 97 paintings. The well-known Christchurch artist. Aston Greathead displayed 18 scenes of South Island landscapes, including some of Kaikoura scenic attractions. The group's president (Mrs R. D. Elliot) opened the exhibition and introduced the guest artist.
Mr Greathead said it was in Kaikoura that he had revived his interest in painting. "It has been my lifelong ambition to paint and at 18 years of age 1 was probably better than I am now. With present day painting it is very difficult to say what is good work. Some people prefer the abstract as it is stimulating, but 1 do not understand modern art so you must fudge me by the collection I have on display,” Mr Greathead added Other exhibits from outside the district included paintings by Rhonda Fleming of Christchurch. Susan Chaytor, of Blenheim. Janet Parsons. Seddon ■nd Vera Roberts, Ward. The annual competition open to local artists was for a painting capturing the "Spirit of Kaikoura.” This attracted five entries of a very high standard making the task of judging verv difficult. The judges, Mrs Elliot and Miss C. Wilding, after consultation with Mr Greathead and Miss Fleming, placed works bv Mrs N. Eccles and Mrs G. E. Gray first, equal. Also among the collection was an exhibition of crayon drawings by pupils of the Kaikoura District High School and St Joseph s Convent. These were very good and it is honed that; the children keep up their in-' terest in future years.
