Body Formally Identified

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 11.

Giving evidence at an inquest today to identify the body of Carole Jean Harvey, aged 23, of Westmere, found near the Remuera golf links on October 30, Dr. D. J. A. Doyle, a pathologist, said a post-mortem examination of the body confirmed the woman was two months’ pregnant.

The inquest was opened before the Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland). A statement was read from Janice Ware, who worked with Miss Harvey for the public accountants’ firm of Wilkinson, Christmas, Steen and Company, Auckland. In her statement Miss Ware said she first met Miss Harvey when both were working for the firm at the end of last January. The last time she saw Miss Harvey was at work on October 17. She worked with her for about nine

months and became familiar with some of her clothing.

On November 4, said Miss Ware, she went to the Chemistry Division of the D.S.I.R. with detectives where she identified Miss Harvey’s clothing and later a sapphire ring and a pearl necklace. “Before Carole went missing she told me she was pregnant,” said Miss Ware. Dr. Doyle said he went to College road. Mount Wellington, on October 30 where he found a body partly concealed under a wooden box about 20ft from the road.

The body was partly decomposed and a post-mortem I examination showed it was that of a female about sft 7in. of slim build and in the 20 to 25 age group.

The hair was thick and coloured brown. He confirmed a two-months pregnancy. Ewan Moore, a dentist, said he examined the skull and teeth of the woman at the Auckland mortuary on November 4. The dental work was consistent with that done on Miss Harvey. Detective T. W. Lewis, a fingerprint expert, gave evidence of taking a thumb print from the body at the

mortuary and comparing it with a partial print found in a diary used by Miss Harvey. They were identical. Evidence on finding the body was given by Detective Inspector J. A. McArthur, who said police inquiries were continuing. The Coroner said that he was quite satisfied on the evidence produced the remains found at Mount Wellington were those of Miss Harvey. He adjourned the inquest.
