Obituary

MR C. N. WHITE Mr Cornelius Nelson (Neil) White, one of Otago’s best known racing men and a prominent farmer, died suddenly in Christchurch on Thursday evening. Mr White, who was In his 51st year, took over the Tiger Hill property at Omakau in partnership with his brother, John, on the death of their father, Mr Con White, about 30 years ago. The partnership became one of the best known in Otago in the breeding of stud sheep. Mr Neil White was w’ell known in racing as a breeder, owner and administrator. In partnership with his brother he bred and raced many good gallopers, including Desert Trek and Satinette. Others included Grey Satin, Mighty Peak, Treasure Pond and White Satin. Mr White was one of a syndicate of three which last year imported the English horse Mallay for stud duty at Wingatui. He was a steward of the Vincent Jockey Club and a member of the committee of the Otago Racing Owners, Breeders, and Trainers’ Association. Mr W'hite played for the Matakanui Football Club and represented the Vincent County at Rugby. He was also a prominent cricketer. He was a past president of the Matakanui Foot, ball Club, a member of the Omakau Domain Board, and an official of the Central Otago A. and P. Society. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and five sons.
