PENNY TAJ MAHAL
Bank’s Offer Declined
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, November 6. A Whangarei hotel owner, Mr L. Blomfield, will not sell his £7OO Taj Mahal penny pile to the National Bank of New Zealand, even though it has offered him a £7O premium. He was approached by the bank as part of its campaign to find penny hoards and collections to ease the current shortage. After about 10 months the model of the Taj Mahal has one floor and several arches, made up of about 150,000 pennies and half-crowns. Proceeds from the pile will go to the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society.
The pile is due for completion in March or April next year. In Wellington the National Bank bought one penny pile for £46. It contained only 10,800 pennies.
