BIG BANANA SHIPMENT

Not Enough Labour

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 7

One of the biggest shipments of bananas to come to Wellington—l,2so,ooo bananas weighing 1500 tons—arrived from Ecuador today and immediately created a problem for the company distributing them.

The general manager of Fruit Distributors, Ltd., Mr C. R. Walker, said this morning that there was a shortage of labour on the waterfront and the ship, because of her perishable cargo, had been labelled preference—and given two gangs.

“We need seven gangs to get her cleared before the bananas start deteriorating—they are highly perishable,” he said.

The bananas have already been 15 days on the sea journey from South America. Mr Walker said his company would try to complete discharge of the ship this week.
