Man Charged With Killing Miss Soutter
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, November 7.
William George Wells, aged 44, unemployed, today appeared before Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., charged with the murder of Lesley Margaret Soutter at Auckland on or about March 29 this year.
Wells, who had to be supported by two policemen, stumbled as he entered the dock to hear the charge read. Sergeant C. H. Shearwood asked the Magistrate for a remand until November 21 for a date to be set for taking depositions. The remand was consented to by Mr R. L. Maclaren, who appeared for Wells. No plea was taken. Sergeant Shearwood told the Magistrate that Wells had
been medically examined before being brought to the Court, and Mr Maclaren said he was aware of this. Wells was escorted into the dock by a uniformed constable and by Detective T. J. Nunan, who discovered the girl’s decomposed body behind the badminton hall, Gillies avenue, Epsom, late in May.
Wells was arrested by De-tective-Inspector B. Wilkinson, who was in charge of the inquiry.
