AUCKLAND, Nov
> Sixteen-month-old Rachel, the Thai orphan adopted by IMr and Mrs J. Hartley, of Milford, has been granted a permit to live permanently in New Zealand by the Minister of Immigration (Mr Shand). i This means that her parents will no longer have to Heave New Zealand, as they were prepared to do rather than give up the chance to adopt her. Rachel, now a happy and healthy toddler, was seven months old when Mr Hartley visited Thailand to get her I from a Catholic orphanage in 'Ubol. He adopted her legally : and brought her back to New I Zealand on a six-month temiporary permit. At that stage the Hartleys did not attempt to get a permanent permit for Rachel because they had been told by a representative of the Labour Department in Auckland that it would be impossible. Instead they planned to leave New Zealand in October, with Rachel and their own four young sons, to settle in Ireland.
“But this just wasn't economically feasible,” Mr Hartley said. “So, in July, we decided to apply for a permanent permit.”
