Zone Extension Refusal Concerns Council
The refusal of the Regional Planning Authority to agree to the extension of the Templeton and Prebbleton townships, or to the extension of the industrial zone beyond Halswell Junction road were matters of concern to the Paparua County Council, said the chairman (Mr D. H. Warren), at the annual meeting of the council last evening. Special help had not been given by the National Roads Board to let the council accelerate the sealing of the remaining main rural roads, in spite of the heavy traffic they carried because of their proximity to the city, said Mr Warren. The board had also required the council to meet the cost of the elaborate lighting installed by the Ministry of Works on Blenheim road, and at the Sockburn roundabout and overbridge, although the work was almost entirely for the road user, and not for local needs. Mr Warren referred to the council’s concern that the Licensing Control Commission appeared to be encouraging the conversion of country hotels to taverns, and mentioned the recent deputation to the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan). Summarising county developments, Mr Warren said that kerbing, channelling and footpaths had been completed at Hornby, and in the county’s rural townships. Progress was being made with the highpressure water extension to Templeton and Prebbleton,
and the council was investigating sewerage schemes for the two townships.
The Sockburn Park swimming pool was proving a great attraction, he said. The council’s first 15 pensioner cottages had been completed, 10 were nearing completion, and plans made to build 30 more at Hornby.
