Wharenui Wins Well In Water Polo
In the second round of water polo matches Wharenui combined well to produce teamwork which a young Jellie Park team could not match. From a half-time score of 4-0, Wharenui held on to win 7-1.
Beckenham B and Elmwood struggled through a scrappy match to draw 2-2; University beat Spreydon by default. In the final match of the night Beckenham A dominated play to beat Christchurch 12-6. Wharenui Stronger With the Canterbury representative, M. McGirr, very active and L. Wilson controlling play in front of Jellie Park’s goal, Wharenui began strongly and Wilson soon scored. Then came a well-placed shot by P. Carpinter and three goals to I. Simson.
In spite of good goal-keeping by G. Furlonger and determined play by I. Johnston, McGlrr scored for Wharenui. Jeliie Park was rewarded just before full-time when R. Pirie netted.
Scrappy Came Good goalkeeping by Elm wood’s B. Henderson and Beckenham B’s M Smith high-lighted their game but poor passing and inaccurate shooting were pre. valent.
D. Lucas opened the scoring for Beckenham and N. Cham berlain almost equalised with a hard throw which Smith saved Soon after, P. Ross evened the scores with a round-arm shot.
In the fourth quarter T. Allen, for Elmwood, and D. Thompson, for Beckenham, scored to make the final score, 2-2.
With P. Hatchwell winning the swim-ups for Christchurch and R. Henry controlling the play when Beckenham A obtained possession, it was some time before any goals were scored In the Christchurch-Beckenham A game.
L. Mclntosh (2), F. McKenzie and Henry scored for Beckenham, and P. Hatchwell (2) and D. Bradley scored for Christchurch to make the half-time result 4-3.
For Christchurch, R. Brodie saved several goals with strong defence until cramp forced him from the water. At thia stage Beckenham utilised the spare man to net seven more goals.
The left hander, G. McKenzie, added Beckenham’s twelfth goal soon after, and Hatchwell and G. Doyle scored for Christchurch to make the final score 12JS.
