Moves Towards Church Unity

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

BRISBANE, Nov. 7.

Formal moves to unite the Anglican Church of Australia with the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational Churches have been initiated by the Anglican Primate, Archbishop Strong.

This historic step in Australian Church life, involving as it does more than half the

population of Australia, has come from the Anglicans. Archbishop Strong has written to the heads of each of the three Protestant Churches setting out Anglican desires in the matter. He conveyed the texts of resolutions passed by the recent Anglican General Synod of Australia. The major resolution called for the Anglican Church to initiate whatever steps were necessary to start negotiations for union with other Australian Churches, in particular the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches. With reference to these three denominations, now engaged in three-way union moves, it asked whether they would accept the Anglican Church as a fourth party to the union negotiations.
