TWO MARES PICKED IN N.Z. TROTTING CUP

Lordship Certain To Be Difficult To Beat

Not since Loyal Nurse in 1949 has a mare won the New Zealand Cup at Addington Raceway. Robin Dundee and Disband are the only mares in the field for the £7500 two-mile race tomorrow and they are expected to be two of the principals in the finish.

Lordship, the backmarker on 42 yards, Tobias, from Pukekohe, a four-year-old and the baby of the field, and Waitaki Hanover, the National Handicap and Ashurton Flying Stakes winner, are expected to be three others prominent at the finish. There will be plenty of support for Cuddle Doon and 1 )octor Barry, two newcomers to the cup field and stallions with proven staying powers.

Robin Dundee has twice been runner-up in the cup, first in 1963 to Cardigan Bay and last year to Garry Dillon on a soft track after receiving a poor run. In some quarters her stamina is considered suspect, but she won the Auckland Cup last December in 4:13.

Prospects of a win for Robin Dundee increased after her easy win at the cup trials last Wednesday, when she paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 24secs with M. Holmes not having to ask her for a ser-j ious effort. Robin Dundee 1 looks a picture of fitness at i the moment and her veteran, trainer, J. Walsh, seems to have timed her preparation to perfection. Lordship will make the two) mares work hard. The backmarker on 42 yards will be I set a stiff assignment if the! front horses apply the pressure from the start. He raced' particularly well in the i spring, when he won three! times and finished an unlucky i fourth at Ashburton. How-1 ever, he disappointed when fifth after a muddling contest for the Hannon Memorial Handicap on October 24. That race has been a poor guide to the cup and it might be wise to overlook his defeat at Oamaru. There have been suggestions that Lordship has been | sore, but his trainer, D. G. i Nyhan, said last week: “If I he’s beaten we will have no i excuses to offer. He’s as good I as gold.” D. G. Jones must have been I pleased with Disband’s finish-: ing run for third behind j Robin Dundee and Waitaki; Hanover at last week’s trials. She is a dour stayer, as can be expected from a daughter of U Scott and Dismiss. She has had a fine cup preparation and it will be surprising! if she fails to make a bold I showing. Lochgair won the Hannon! Memorial Handicap, but dis-1 appointed at the trials. Fine Stayer Cuddle Doon is one of the best stayers in the field, as he proved when he outstayed a useful field in the Methven Cup. He finished second in the Ashburton Flying Stakes a week later and completed his cup preparation with a win on October 26. He is in fine form and should go well, j

Waitaki Hanover’s racing! early in the spring was of a very high standard. He looked well at the trials, but did not run on quite as strongly as expected. The extra three furlongs in the cup might find him wanting, especially if the pace is on from the start. If the race develops into a sprint home, he could take beating. Tobias is a problem horse. His record is outstanding, but whether he can bridge the gap to the best pacing company with a win in a New Zealand Cup remains to be seen. When Lookaway and Lordship won the cup at four years they had had extensive racing experience in the top company. Tobias has done everything asked of him by his part-owner and trainer, J. Butcher, who has the Newport Chief stallion very fit. He looks the part and in spite of the record book being against him. it will be surprising if he makes a dismal \ showing. Of the others none appeal more than Doctor Barry and Master Alan. J. D. Litten has put in much time with Doctor Barry and if he gets him away smoothly, he should be capable of getting into the finish. Master Alan, although well into the veteran class, has had an interrupted preparation because of soreness. If he has come on as well as expected, he could be a place j chance. Three years ago he! was racing with distinction against Cardigan Bay and ; other fine pacers. Full Sovereign and Oakhampton will be the outsiders. They are not forlorn chances by any means, but the will need luck to finish in front of Robin Dundee, Lordship and Disband. HIGHLAND MECCA: Fine win at Motukarara. Ran on quite well for fifth at Addington on October 26. Should take beating. KINGSDOWN CHIEF: Won well at Forbury in spite of racing greenly. Should be prominent. LINKWOOD LADY: Placed at Hutt Park on Saturday. , Could be returning to form. OPTION: Came on well for second to Bramlock at Kaikoura. Could be coming back to form. PROUDLY: Has speed, but not able to top off sound efforts in recent starts. Could surprise. SONNY JIM: Disappointing at Kaikoura when he finished fifth. Weak efforts lately. THURBOPROP: Good third at trials last week. Could be coming back to good form of early spring. WARILY: Chased Meadow Bank home at Waikouaiti. Deserves a win and could be prominent. CUDDLE DOON: Impressive winner at Addington on October 26. Fine staying background, with win in Methven Cup to his credit in September. Has ability to race anywhere in a field and stamina could carry him into a place. DISBAND: Has not paced a really bad race this season and has firmed in favour following a second to Lochgair in the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru on October 24 and third at trials last Wednesday. Fine stayer which looks ready to make a bold show- ' ing. DOCTOR BARRY; Finished with powerful stayer’s run for close fourth at trials last week after slow start. Has drawn wide, which might help him begin reasonably well. Has never looked better than at present and certain to run distance out as well as any of rivals if true test of stamina deI velops. FULL SOVEREIGN: Won sprint at Auckland in September and finished fair fourth in Hannon Memorial at Oamaru. Stopped to fifth at trials last week. Best form has been over sprint and middle distances and might find tough two miles beyond him. However, if the race develops into a sprint home, he could be close up. LOCHGAIR: Won Hannon Memorial in impressive style, but disappointed at trials last week. Has at times shown fine staying form, but has been too inconsistent in last 18 months to recommend with much confidence. TOBIAS: Certain to be one of the popular fancies after winning with ease in four starts at Alexandra Park this season. This will be first test in top company at , Addington and in spite of fine form, will have to be taken on trust. Certainly . looks the part and might not be wise to discard even

though he has not met such exalted company. OAKHAMPTON: Fine staying form in the north. Finished second, after giving start of 30 yards, to Tobias at Auckland on October 22. Has not settled down as well as had been hoped, but could show up as has great reserves of stamina. MASTER ALAN: Weak form background, but has come on apace after every race. Finished a fair way back in eighth place in Hannon Memorial, but went quite a fair race all the same. Is very game and should be running on more strongly than most. WAITAKI HANOVER: Won National Handicap and Ashburton Flying Stakes like potential cup winner. Was well beaten by Robin Dundee at last week’s trials, but went sound race all the same. If favoured with reasonable run, could take part in finish. ROBIN DUNDEE: Most unlucky in a number of her races this season. Increased in popularity as a sound prospect when she won easily at trials. Has come on very quickly in last three weeks and should strip fit mare. Looks the hardest to beat. LORDSHIP: Fifth in Hannon Memorial following on a win at Forbury, an unlucky fourth at Ashburton and two wins at Hutt Park. Will be set a stiff assignment from this mark, but has great brilliance. In spite of handicap looks certain to play prominent part in finish. Robin Dundee Lordship Disband 2.5 p.m.— FIRST RICCARTON STAKES, £700; three-year-olds; 12f. 0902 Authentic (1), R. PIMIENTA: XVon well at trials and could cause a surprise. Has shown ability in training. RENATA: Fair fifth on October 26 gives her an outside chance of being placed. SOLINOS: Fair fifth on October 26. but failed at trials. Has fair ability. DARK SUN: Most Impressive winner on October 26. Should again be one of best prospects.
