Suburban Games

Most of the games were affected by the rain which caused the pitches to be very slow and in all the three senior A matches it was obvious that the wickets were by far more suitable for batting than bowling. Beckenham was untroubled to dismiss Burnside in its first in. nings for 73, the wickets being shared by Davison five for 12, and Townsend five for 33. However, in Us second innings Burnside rallied and a good innings by Treloar, assisted by Ellis, dismissed any hope Beckenham had of an outright win. Sumner had little difficulty passing Papanui’s first innings score of 162. An excellent innings by B. Buckner, which included one six and four fours, was mainly responsible for Sumner’s first innings lead. Buckner was ably supported by a useful innings from Tansley. At Waltham Park, on a slow wicket, Merivale resumed its second Innings and because of an excellent opening partnership of more than 100 by Cully and Mannix, was able to declare. Cully scored an excellent 101. Requiring 146 runs for>he outright win. Waltham at stumps had 117 without Ipss; Competition points at the end of round two are: Beckenham 15, Waltham 10, Burnside 6, Sumner 6. Papanui 2, Merivale 1.
