Malaysia

Sir, —“T.J.” claimed that the Malaysian Government arrested hundreds of members of opposition parties before President Johnson’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur. But according to « report in “The

Press” the number arrested before President Johnson’s arrival was 70. The demonstrations held in Kuala Lumpur were not at all like those held in either Australia or New Zealand. In fact, the one in Kuala Lumpur was a riot. I quote a report in “The Press” on October 31: “They threw stones at riot police guarding the centre and uprooted posts flying the American and Malaysian flags near the centre.” The riot police, according tn the same report, were forced to open fire after the demonstrators refused to disperse in spite of tear gas and barton charges. The Malaysian Government is the only Government in South-east Asia that has practised parliamentary democracy with success.— Yours, etc., I.Q. November 3, 19166.

Sir,—Thanks to “T.J.” for pointing out that Malaysia has “second-class citizens.” Does he mean second-class when they go about tearing down the Malaysian flag? Noone is second class if he refuses to be. —Yours etc. DOUBTFUL CITIZEN. November 3, 1966.
