Butchers Don’t Want Them
Over-fat lambs are not wanted by butchers who fill their requirements at Addington market. This was made clear this week when an entry of more than 1800 fat lambs came up for sale.
A large number of the lambs were over-fat and there were instances of entire consignments being passed. One of the principal buyers in the fat sheep and fat iamb pens (Mr M. S. Henry) said his butcher clients did not want these over-fat lambs, but they would pay fair value for quality lambs of mediumweight.
On more than one occasion at this week’s Addington Market, Mr Henry took no interest in the fat lambs being offered. Asked if he was bidding, he told the auctioneers: “Sorry, no.” Mr Henry said that along with over-fat lambs, butchers did not want pens of lambs in which there were several medium weights, plus two or
three over-fat lambs. For many months now, butchers have demonstrated, particularly in the hogget section —now being sold as fat sheep —that they have a distinct preference for well-grown medium-weight sheep The pen which would once have won a prize in a fat stock competition, would now not receive a second glance.
